Long before we lit our first fire, 417 Tribune Street in Albury was a butcher's shop. In the early 1930s, deliveries still went out by horse and cart.
The Butt family years
In the 1950s Arthur Butt took over and began smoking rainbow trout over hardwood. Word spread quickly. Over the years his trout found its way to visiting Royals and to Parliament House in Canberra, and the business became known as Butt's Gourmet Smokehouse.
As families arrived through the Bonegilla Migrant Centre just up the road, they brought European smallgoods traditions with them, and the smokehouse grew to meet the demand: hams, bacon, sausages and more.
New custodians
In 2016 Anthony Ainsworth and Marie Bucher became the custodians of the smokehouse and renamed it Murray River Smokehouse. We kept the original smoke oven, and we kept the approach: start with great Australian produce and let real wood smoke do the work.
